Made in the UK from sustainably sourced Panguaneta poplar plywood, this kit is designed to be posted through your letterbox and constructed at home to provide a safe space for female solitary bees to build nests and lay their eggs.

Solitary bees are a joy to watch and are non-aggressive, therefore child and pet friendly. They don't live in colonies (unlike bumblebees and honey bees) and are facing a crisis having lost much of their natural habitat - they need your help!

What bees will visit my bee hotel?

A bee hotel is designed for solitary bees, as a nesting site for female solitary bees to nest and lay their eggs. A number of species could take residence but those most likely are mason bees and leafcutter bees.

You'll know when they start nesting in Spring and Summer as they will return to the hollow holes with pollen attached to their hind legs or belly. The bees will collect dabs of mud to create cell walls along the tubes, or with bits of leaf (these are the leaf-cutter bees). The holes will be sealed and blocked off by the mother where she has laid her eggs, leaving them with a supply of pollen and nectar as food. The larvae (baby bees) will grow up in their the tube and hatch the next year to start the life cycle all over again.

Bumblebees and honeybees will not use your bee hotel as unlike solitary bees, they live in colonies/hives.

How long does it take to build?

It takes less than 20 minutes to build on your own or with a child under adult supervision.

What type of bees will visit?

My bee hotel has changed colour, is this normal?

Yes, this is completely normal. The natural colour of the wood fades over time, but don’t worry, the bees don’t mind and your hotel will work just as well.

Do I need to replace the tubes in the bee hotel?

Yes, we recommend purchasing replacement tubes once a year and replacing the tubes once all the bees have hatched. The tubes can be placed in a sheltered spot outdoors if you’re unsure if any bees are left inside when you insert the new tubes into the hotel. You can purchase replacement tubes here

Should I bring the hotel indoors in the winter?

If you have a sheltered outdoor space such as a shed, we recommend storing the bee hotel there during the cold wet months November – March. Do not store your bee hotel indoors as the warmth of your home may confuse the baby bees and cause them to emerge prematurely.
