At Beevive, we’re passionate about spreading awareness of solitary bees and their importance to our ecosystem. That’s why we were thrilled to donate our DIY Bee Hotel Kits to the 1st Old Malden Scout Group, who put the kits to the test during one of their meetings.
The evening started with a fascinating talk led by Amy, Buglife’s Digital Officer and the group’s Sectional Assistant. Amy explained the vital role solitary bees play as pollinators and how providing nesting habitats can make a real difference for these amazing insects.
The scouts then got stuck in, splitting into groups to assemble their very own bee hotels. We designed our kits to be simple and fun to build, and the scouts proved just how effective teamwork can be! Aside from a little help with some trickier pegs for the younger participants, the group did a fantastic job creating habitats that solitary bees can use when nesting resumes in spring.
We were delighted to hear the feedback from the scouts:
- “It was a nice and calm activity to do.”
- “It was fun!”
- “Parts were a bit tricky to assemble, but the instructions were straightforward, and it was fun!”
- “It was interesting!”
It was inspiring to see the scouts so engaged in learning about solitary bees while building something that will directly support biodiversity in their local area. A few lucky scouts got to take the bee hotels home, where they’ll provide vital nesting spots in South West London.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to the 1st Old Malden Scout Group for their enthusiasm and for letting Beevive be part of such a meaningful activity. Together, we’re making small but significant steps toward helping solitary bees thrive.
